Environmental Commitment

Helping public sector customers achieve tough environmental targets, especially for the reduction of harmful greenhouse gases, is a key priority for Buying Solutions Energy.

The need to conserve energy and protect the environment underscores all our policies and practices. These fundamental principles have to be satisfied when evaluating competitive tenders for products and services, and both customers and suppliers are strongly encouraged to develop awareness of these issues in their activities at all times.

More and more organisations are looking to buy energy from renewable sources. The Energy team has put in place arrangements to allow easier and more cost effective ways of doing this. For example, electricity generated from renewable sources is now available to all sub 100kW sites at the same price, after taking Climate Change Levy into account, as electricity generated from conventional fossil fuels such as coal.

Our environmental objectives are to:

  • Reduce the levels of both direct and indirect pollution associated with our activities
  • Establish sustainable development as a clear feature of our decision making
  • Encourage the use of greener technologies and services in the public sector
  • Seek continual improvements in our environmental performance, through an Environmental Management System that includes the setting of relevant and measurable targets for this policy, with continuous monitoring and review of progress

Energy features prominently in the Government's new sustainable development strategy "Securing the Future" in which the Prime Minister challenges local and central Government, as major consumers of energy and water, to lead by example.

"Securing the Future" contains around 250 commitments to action in four areas including energy and climate change. For more details visit www.sustainable-development.gov.uk
