Ultra Mobile PCs

It's an Ultra Mobile PC

Smaller than a laptop but larger than a PDA, an ultra mobile PC (UMPC) is able to do everything that a laptop can but is lighter and more compact. However, despite being available for over a year, UMPCs have not achieved their full potential or sold as well as their laptop counterparts.

Why is this, and what is the future for the UMPC?

About the size of a paperback novel, devices only qualify as UMPCs if they meet certain specifications including:

  • having a screen size of 7 inches or smaller
  • a minimum resolution of 800x480 pixels
  • weigh less than 900g
  • have a landscape display orientation and a touch-sensitive screen.

Manufacturers and features

UMPCs were the result of a joint development exercise by Microsoft, Intel and Samsung in 2006. Now there are a number of manufacturers including Asus, Fujitsu, General Dynamics Itronix, HTC, OQO and Tablet Kiosk.

The accessory portfolio for the 7" UMPC platform is currently being developed by several companies and includes the usual suspects, such as carry cases, screen protectors, styli, protective bump cases and docking stations. In addition to these ‘standard' accessories, several prototypes of ‘mounting solutions' have been previewed which permit the UMPC device to be mounted in the car, on the wall or attached to an adjustable arm.

Depending on the model purchased, a UMPC amalgamates a number of services into a single device, providing access to the internet via Bluetooth (in most cases) and WiFi technology, giving users the ability to surf the internet, conduct business via email or VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) and even find their way around by built-in GPS software.

UMPCs are capable of most of the user applications currently enjoyed on desktops or laptops, including Windows XP and Vista, which allows full productivity while on the move, effectively allowing you to transport your PC around with you in a smaller, lighter, more manageable package.

It all sounds too good to be true...

Despite the advantages of being able to use all of the UMPC services on the move, there are some drawbacks to the devices.

One criticism is usability. Some UMPCs have integrated keyboards often featuring oversized versions of thumb-style keyboards similar to those found on PDAs and smartphones. The frustration is that while there is the facility to attach external USB keyboards and mice, this ultimately defeats the purpose of having an ultra mobile device. Many models now offer sliding screens revealing QWERTY keyboards.

Battery Life also poses problems for customers, although obviously there are marked differences between models and it all depends on what you use your UMPC for. Newer models are boasting battery life of up to 7.5 hours which is a marked improvement on the two hour life of some of the original models. Currently, chipmakers are preparing special processors and platforms designed to extend the battery life of such systems, while keeping the performance at a satisfactory level.

The original UMPCs failed to gain market traction due to high cost and poor battery life, but 2007 saw a new wave of UMPCs which have become more affordable. However, many are still more than the price of a laptop. The UMPC is designed to equip customers with the tools needed when out of the office. The ultimate advantage is mobility. However, because of the variations in the models it is important to draw up a shortlist of your own requirements.

Alternatively, a number of new model ranges are expected and shipments scheduled for 2008. This may drive down prices of current UMPCs and make pricing more competitive as new technology developments are made.
